Can UV-C light really disinfect?

UV-C light is a highly effective and well-documented disinfection method that has been in use for more than 100 years. It was Nils Finsen, the Danish-Faroese scientist and Nobel Prize laureate, who discovered that ultraviolet light had a unique effect on bacteria.

Today, UV-C light is often used to disinfect equipment. For example, UV-C rays are applied in air and water purification at hospitals and in food production facilities, as well as in water supplies.

How?

UV-C light destroys the DNA and RNA of cells, preventing them from reproducing and multiplying.

As a result, the light neutralises most types of micro-organisms, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi. UV-C light can reduce the effect of bacteria and viruses by more than 99.99999%, depending on the light’s intensity and the duration of exposure.
